Really Real For Forever, the indie pop debut from Los Angeles’ Billionaires, displays an extraordinary songwriting spectrum. It’s hard to imagine a listener listening to sterling songs like “The End of Summer Song” “80’s Movies” or “Butterflies” and not coming away all smiles. As the record progresses, the darker moods of “Cold Day” and “Confidence” will haunt you for days. Such is the product of the environment in which The Billionaires grew up. A bunch of working class kids from Martha’s Vineyard, their formative years were spent in a place where the summer is Peyton Place and the winter is The Shining. Tim Laursen, one of the band’s many singers, explains the bands beginning: “We have grown up together playing music but mostly being a part of a large creative group of friends, a sometimes very drunk, loving, angry, and sexy group of people. Sometimes there is no loving: just drinking and fishing and starting fires. We spread out over the island chasing kicks like fried clams or house parties. We are now looking for you to hang out with us.” The band recently relocated to Los Angeles, where they caught the ear of longtime friend, Todd Philips (former Bullet LaVolta/The Juliana Hatfield Three drummer). Recalls Philips: “I was at a dinner party at Tim’s house, when the whole band started singing “80’s Movies” around the dinner table. I was absolutely floored with how immediately catchy the chorus was.” After hearing a handful of demos that the group had recorded the summer before, Todd decided to produce the record with the help of another Los Angeles via Boston friend, Wally Gagel (Muse, Folk Implosion, Rolling Stones). The Billionaires will begin touring in late spring. |
